5 Tips to “Get a Life”

Hi, I’m Becs. I’m a life coach who helps leaders get a life.

With 20 years of experience in the corporate space, I understand making what you do into who you are. But you are so much more than what you do. Finding the balance between doing and being is crucial to keeping your job out of the rest of your life. This is getting increasingly hard to achieve as the barriers between work and home merge, with the flexibility of “working from home” switching into the reality of living at work.

If this resonates then this is a blog for you. Read on to find 5 simple tips to create the life you want.

1. Five minutes of fun.

This is a great place to start with building the life you want. Schedule 5 minutes of fun each day. The tricky thing is finding things that you find fun. It could be as simple as doing the wordle (I’m really enjoying Worldle at the moment), sitting in a hammock, or dancing to your favourite beats. Once you land on your “fun” thing, schedule it and challenge yourself to keep doing it for 5 days. What do you notice?

2. Keep a gratitude journal.

Again a super simple little hack, get yourself a little notebook and write down three things that you are grateful for. The trick to this is making it relevant and specific. Make it relevant to you - either what you are looking for more of or something that speaks to you. I call mine “Moments of magic”. Once a day write down three things that hit your relevant spot and make these specific. I like to write my moments of magic down before I go to sleep. This gives me a chance to reflect back on the day and pull out the moments of magic that I would otherwise forget about. Consistency is important here, picking a time and consistently writing down three things. If you’re having a rough day, go back and read all of the wonderful things you have written down. Not to pretend the bad day didn’t happen, but to remind you that this is but a passing moment and better things are yet to come.

3. Know what you want.

If you are ready to get the life you want, you need to know what it is that you want. So want do you really, really want? Here’s a hint - if the word “should” appears it’s probably not what you really want. It seems obvious, but if you don’t know what you want, it is actually really hard to get it. If you are struggling to work out what you want here are some questions that could help:

  • If you won LOTTO tomorrow what would you change?

  • If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you try?

  • If you knew you only had a month left to live, how would you live differently?

Or if you have worked out what you want, try and come up with ten reasons why this is important to you and why now.

4. Make yourself a priority.

For many people making themselves a priority is hard. It feels selfish and self-serving because many of us have been taught that we should put others before ourselves. I have learned that for you to take care of others you first have to take care of yourself. It is hard to do this if you don't make yourself a priority. Here’s a challenge for you:

Grab a pen and write down your top 10 priorities.

Did you make the list?

Does your list align with how you spend your time?

What changes would you like to make?

5. Learn to love yourself.

Self-care is a great place to start, but really change comes when you embrace self-love. The mirror exercise below is a great way to build your self-love, I promise you seven days of this exercise will change the way you look at yourself.
